Anaheim is the second-largest city in Orange County and is best known as the home of the legendary Disneyland Resort, which includes Disneyland Park, Disney California Adventure Park, and Downtown Disney. The original Disneyland theme park was founded by Walt Disney in the 1950s. It was built on what used to be 160 acres of orange and walnut trees, and it has expanded over the years to multiple resorts in California, Florida, Paris, Tokyo, China, and Hong Kong.
Anaheim offers many opportunities to experience the area’s arts and cultural landscape, including the Anaheim Gardenwalk, Anaheim Founder’s Park, the MUZEO Art Museum, and Oak Canyon Nature Center.
Anaheim also has several parks in the area, providing opportunities for outdoor fun and adventure to residents and visitors. The Yorba Regional Park has picnic areas, lakes, and miles of trails, and Stoddard Park offers sports fields, picnic areas, and a playground. There are several other parks in addition to these.
The annual Anaheim Children’s Festival brings families together to celebrate the arts. This festival features live music, cultural dances, karaoke, and art lessons. The Anaheim Spring Carnival focuses on the area’s Latin community and includes live entertainment, carnival rides, food, and games.
The city also hosts a variety of other festivals and events throughout the year, including the HOLI Festival of Colors, Silk Road Unity Festival, the Sign Language Festival, Anaheim Halloween Festival, and the Literary Women Festival of Authors.
The Anaheim Ducks ice hockey club and the Los Angeles Angels baseball team are the two major league sports teams based in Anaheim. Sports enthusiasts also have ample opportunities to play golf or tennis in Anaheim, and residents can participate in area softball leagues.
Anaheim is largely supported by the tourism industry, and The Walt Disney Company, which is the city’s largest employer, brings approximately $4.7 billion per year to the area. As the largest convention center on the West Coast, the Anaheim Convention Center also supports the city’s tourism industry, as a venue for national conferences and events. Other industries represented in the city are manufacturing, retail trade, health care, and social assistance.
In addition to Disney, some of the major employers in Anaheim are Kaiser Foundation Hospital, Northgate Gonzalez Markets, Hilton Anaheim, Angels Baseball, Anaheim Regional Medical Center, and Time Warner Cable.
The Anaheim area was settled as an agricultural community by German-American families in 1857. These new residents grew grapes for winemaking, walnuts, lemons, and oranges. The creation of Disneyland changed the landscape of the area into a tourist destination. As of the 2010 U.S. Census, Anaheim had a population of 336,265 people.
Anaheim’s climate is Subtropical Mediterranean, with warm winters and hot summers, making it a great place to enjoy outdoor activities year-round.
